Alexandrite side effects and safe preparation

Alexandrite hair removal can cause skin reactions as well as reduce hair. Before each visit, we check whether your skin, medicines or recent sun exposure have changed since the previous treatment.

Why a recent tan matters

The treatment targets pigment in hair, but the surrounding skin also contains pigment. A fresh tan or sunburn can alter the risk of unwanted skin heating. Tell us before attending rather than trying to cover a tan with makeup or self-tanner.

We may delay treatment. That decision protects recovery; it does not mean the treatment can never be suitable for you. We explain when reassessment makes sense instead of promising a universal waiting period for all skin types.

Tell us about your skin and medicines

Important details include previous blistering or dark marks after treatment, raised scars, cold sores and active irritation. Show us where you have tattoos or permanent makeup. We also need to know about prescribed medicines and strong skincare products.

Which reactions need attention?

Redness, follicle swelling and discomfort may be temporary. Blisters, burns, lasting pigment change, infection and scarring are possible complications. The AAD hair-removal FAQ describes both minor reactions and less common injury.

Contact us if pain is increasing, blisters develop or the skin seems infected. Do not scratch or pick an injured area. We will advise on review rather than ask you to continue treating over a reaction. Report delayed colour change before another laser session, even when the area no longer hurts.

Plan recovery around your real routine

Tell us about beach days, outdoor work, swimming and other treatments when we plan the appointment. We provide written advice on sun protection, washing, skincare and returning to your usual activities. A treatment course should fit safe recovery, not require you to ignore it.

A previous appointment without problems does not remove the need for these checks. Changes in skin condition, hair removal between visits and medicines can all affect the next decision.
