Botox Brands and Types: Botox, Dysport and Xeomin

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are different brands of botulinum toxin type A. People often call the whole treatment category “Botox”, but the product names are not interchangeable. The useful distinction is the exact medicine, the area being treated and the plan our doctor recommends for you.

Botox brands: what the names mean

These three names refer to different preparations of the same toxin type. They temporarily reduce the nerve signals that make selected muscles contract.

Botox

Botox contains onabotulinumtoxinA. It is a specific medicine with its own product instructions. A booking described as “Botox” should still identify the medicine planned for your treatment; the familiar category name does not settle that question. Official Botox product information.

Dysport

Dysport contains abobotulinumtoxinA. Its units and ingredient precautions are specific to that product. It contains lactose and may contain traces of cow’s milk protein. A cow’s-milk-protein allergy prevents treatment with Dysport. This allergy is different from lactose intolerance, so explain the reaction you have had to our doctor. Xeomin

Xeomin contains incobotulinumtoxinA and is formulated without accessory proteins. The active toxin is itself a protein. “Without accessory proteins” therefore does not mean protein-free, toxin-free or free of side effects. It also does not establish that Xeomin is the best choice for every person. Official Xeomin product information.

Does “types of Botox” mean different treatments?

It can refer to a brand, the treatment area or the intended degree of change. Those are separate decisions. Our doctor first assesses your concern, facial movement and medical history. We then explain the medicine and treatment plan.

A plan for forehead lines is not automatically the same as a plan for frown lines between the eyebrows. “Full face” describes a plan across suitable areas; it is not a fixed dose or an instruction to treat every facial muscle. We discuss which areas need treatment and which do not.

You do not need to choose a brand before your consultation. If you have a preference or have had a good or poor response before, tell us. Bring the previous product name, treatment date and treated areas if you have them. This gives our doctor a more useful starting point than a brand ranking online.

Why unit numbers cannot compare brands

Each product measures potency using its own units. A unit of one brand is not equivalent to a unit of another. Do not use a conversion chart or compare two quotes by their unit counts alone. Product-specific unit warning.

What every brand discussion must include

Tell our doctor about allergies, medicines, nerve or muscle conditions, and any recent toxin treatment elsewhere. Also tell us if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not stop prescribed medicine on your own.
